Summer Adventure Sailing

In the summer holidays we take advantage of the great weather to organise some longer and more adventurous voyages.

  • RYA Start Yachting or Competent Crew

  • DofE Gold Residential

  • Sailing Experience Preferred or Necessary depending on the voyage

Summer Adventure voyages normally include longer offshore journeys, often involving spending the night at sea, as well as the opportunity to visit remote places and spend time exploring them.

In many years we also take part in races or events such as the Tall Ships Races or Small Ships Races along with other sail training vessels crewed by young people. These events mix challenging offshore sailing with social and cultural activites for crews, arranged by the host ports.

Fowey Summer Regatta

18th August to 28th August 2024

Fowey Royal Regatta is held every August and is one of Britain’s premier sailing events with a long history. It features a variety of boats - Troys, Fowey Rivers, Cruisers, Falmouth Working Boats and a handicap dinghy fleet. There are also traditional land-based events including the Carnival procession, fireworks, crab-catching and harbour swim, the Giant Pasty ceremony and more.

Your voyage will start at Plymouth with a training voyage to Fowey on the first day. We intend to enter two Cruiser Races from Fowey to Falmouth and from Falmouth to Fowey at the start of the regatta, then spend some time in Fowey before making the voyage back to Plymouth. Sea Staff will talk to crew about the plan so all are involved. Some will want to hone sailing skills, others might want to try a bit of navigation and all will be able to build miles for their RYA log book. This Summer Adventure has lots of potential for great experiences from racing to cruising seeing some of the most beautiful anchorages and harbours in the South-West. This voyage is for 16-25 Year olds and qualifies as a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential.

Summer Sailing Adventure Channel Islands

31st August to 8th September

This adventure voyage offers the opportunity to sail from the great sailing base of Plymouth, with all its naval heritage, with a voyage plan of crossing the Channel to the Channel Islands, spending time in different Channel Island and maybe French ports. It should prove a more restful experience than the ASTO Small Ships Race giving time to drink in the beauty of the environment. The voyage will finish with another Channel crossing from the Channel Islands or a French port to Northney. Sea Staff will talk to crew about the plan so all are involved. Some will want to hone sailing skills, others might want to try a bit of navigation and all will be able to build miles for their RYA log book. This Summer Adventure has lots of potential for great experiences of long passages. This voyage is for 16-25 Year olds and qualifies as a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential. RYA Competent Crew is desired but not required

ASTO RNLI Passage Race

To commemorate 200 years of the great work of the RNLI the Association of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO), of which Morning Star Trust is proud to be a member, working with the RNLI are the organisers of ASTO Small Ships RNLI Passage Race in which we are entering two boats. We will start at our base at Northeny and make passage across the Channel sail training as we go. Sea Staff will talk to crew about the plan so all are involved. Some will want to hone sailing skills, others might want to try a bit of navigation and all will be able to build miles for their RYA log book. This Summer Adventure has lots of potential for great experiences from visiting the Channel Islands to racing in company with a variety of ships giving spectacular seascapes.
